556.0 "Stoker" - 8bit general project
Sound sample
Project Information
- Universal sound project suitable for custom modifications, especially for individual light settings.
- The sound project is designed for 8-bit sound decoders of the MX series.
- Recommended minimum software version for decoder is 40.22.
- The decoder has base address set to 3.
- Reset can be performed by setting CV8 = 8.

Max Speed Setting
We recommend setting max speed via CV57, not via CV5. Setting max speed via CV5 may cause changes in sound range. Acceleration time CV3 and deceleration time CV4 settings are not affected by max speed setting via CV57.
Shunting Mode
In the general project, position lights are turned off in shunting mode. In models, it is common to connect position lights that shine simultaneously with headlights. If this functionality is required, it can be enabled by setting CV37 = 3.
The mode reduces acceleration and braking times to ¼ of the setting in CV3 and CV4. If this functionality is not required, it can be disabled by setting CV124 = 16. Complete deactivation of acceleration and braking times is possible by setting CV124 = 19.
If shunting mode functionality is not required, it can be disabled by setting CV124 = 0.
Standard shunting mode setting in the project is CV124 = 18.
In shunting mode, a short horn is triggered at each start. This functionality is implemented by script.
For the short horn to be triggered, three conditions must be met:
- The function must be enabled via F3.
- Engine sound must be enabled via F8.
- The model must be starting from zero speed.
Setting CV837 = 16 disables this functionality, standard setting is CV837 = 0.
Compressor
The project implements two versions of compressor activation, both are implemented by script:
- Random compressor activation, which is conditioned by engine sound being enabled via F8. This is turned off by enabling compressor via F17.
- Enabling compressor via F17. It is conditioned by F8 being enabled and zero speed.
Setting CV837 = 1 disables the possibility of activating compressor via F17.
Setting CV837 = 2 disables random compressor activation.
Setting CV837 = 3 disables both options, standard setting is CV837 = 0.
Wheel Squealing in Curves
Wheel squealing in curves is implemented by script. For triggering, several conditions must be met:
- The function itself must be enabled via F19, engine sound must be enabled via F8.
- The sound will not trigger at very slow speed, set speed must be more than 14 (from speed range 0 – 126).
- The sound will not trigger at high speed, set speed must be less than 100 (from speed range 0 – 126).
Setting CV837 = 4 disables wheel squealing in curves, standard setting is CV837 = 0.
User Function Layout Setting
User function layout setting is possible via CV400 – CV428. The project does not use it for its needs.
Decoder Reset
It may happen that while setting up the decoder you make a mistake that you cannot fix or get lost in settings. In this case, we recommend performing a decoder reset. To reset the decoder, program CV8 = 8. This programming will perform a reset to sound project settings.

Sound Sample Numbers
"Script" means that the corresponding sound is used in the script, outside of normal use within CV. The sound number is listed here for possible standalone use of the sound when the script is disabled.
Steam Beat Frequency
The steam beat frequency is determined by CV267 – simulated axle detector. The set value "70" indicates approximately 4, 6, or 8 steam beats per wheel revolution according to the selected steam beat set (4 – two-cylinder steam locomotive, 6 – three-cylinder steam locomotive, 8 – four-cylinder steam locomotive, internal setting according to the type of steam locomotive).
Because there is a strong dependency on the motor and gearing, individual adjustment must usually be made to achieve the corresponding number of steam beats.
Decreasing the CV267 value causes higher beat frequency and vice versa. The setting should be done at lower speed, approximately at speed step 10.
