M62 "Sergej"

M62 Sergej

The M62 is a diesel-electric locomotive designed for heavy freight service.

It was manufactured between 1965 and 2001 in the Soviet Union, specifically in the Ukrainian SSR.

The locomotive's engine is a supercharged two-stroke twelve-cylinder with vertical, V-arranged cylinders. The low-speed engine with a displacement of 150.6 L has a rated output of 1,470 kW (2,000 HP) at 750 rpm. The power transmission is electric, and at idle speed, the tachometer needle showed 400 rpm. The engine is supercharged by three blowers. The two side ones are powered by exhaust gases - turbochargers. The middle one is mechanically driven by the engine and is of the Roots type, used to create pressure during engine start. The locomotive has two three-axle bogies where all axles are driven. The first delivered locomotives were not equipped with sufficient exhaust silencing. The combustion engine noise could be heard several kilometers from the track. A new silencer was fitted from the 113th unit produced, and the power thus decreased by approximately 50 horsepower (from 2,000 HP to 1,950 HP).

273 units of class M62 were imported to Hungary in 1,435 mm gauge for Hungarian State Railways.

6 units of class M62 were imported to Hungary in 1,435 mm gauge for Győr–Sopron–Ebenfurt Railway Co.

15 units of class M62 were imported to Hungary in 1,524 mm gauge for Hungarian State Railways.
